GOLD WINNER 2024/25
Freya’s Mead
This fine currant mead is from Tarp Brewery, and the name of the mead came about in collaboration with the café and alchemist shop Freya’s Valley in Helgenaes.
The currants come from Vibegaard in Skaerbaek.

DENMARK’S BEST MEAD 2024/25
Elixir and a potion for Gods
Freya awakens the senses
– my own completely personal experience
The bottle
The first thing that meets one is a classic and beautiful brown mead bottle in ceramic with an old treasure map style label. The typeface also points back in time, and next to the name Freya, which refers to the Nordic goddess, sits a small black cat. It’s Bagheera from Helgenaes. The round logo at the top is the tree Yggdrasil, so the bottle wants us in every possible way on a journey back to Norse mythology.
The smell
It is very powerful without too much of a honey scent. The alcohol and a faint berry scent are significant and quite fragrant.
The color
The color is simply breathtaking and beautiful, like the finest amber. At times it is almost a deep and warm orange – a color which, traditionally seen, i.a. stands for the following qualities: creativity, sensuality, enjoyment and joie de vivre. Very fitting for Freya 🙂
The taste
And now we get to it! The taste is so sensual and rich that it activates the taste buds with sweetness in a dynamic way. But never with an overpowering honey taste. At the same time, the taste bears a clear hint of currants, which gives it a portion of acidity. In this way, a very balanced taste is achieved, which is worthy of the Nordic Gods.
I dare to call this mead an elixir for both body, mind, soul and spirit.
When the bottle is empty
Yes, it can be used as a beautiful vase for flowers, feathers or other dried natural materials.
Café & Alchemist shop
Norse mythology
Why a Freya mead?
First of all, Tarp Brewery uses Norse mythology as a theme in several of its mead series. Next, my little shop is called Freya’s Valley, so it seems so right to call the mead Freya.
The name Freya’s Valley comes from its location on The Holy Ness (Helgenæs) peninsula on Djursland. The shop is located in Esby, which is down in a valley close to Elvenking Mountain (Ellemandsbjerget). In ancient times, sacrifices were made to the Nordic god Frey up on top of the mountain, and the mountain can therefore rightly be called Frey’s Mountain
And when we have Frey’s Mountain, then we must also have Freya’s Valley, so things will be balanced 🙂
On the label on the back of Freya’s mead, you can also read a bit about the connection to Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings. Actually both Gandalf, Bilbo Baggins and the elves drink mead.

Mead
In Freya’s Valley, several meads other than Freya currantmead from Tarp Brewery are also sold.
Namely Frey, Frigg, the Vikings’ favourite, Odin, Thor and Ravenmead.
Mead is not served in the café, but you are welcome to have a small taste of it.
The price of 1 bottle of mead is DKK 150 – and you can safely say that it is gourmet mead.
A big thank you to brewmaster Claus for brewing this masterful mead and giving me the opportunity to create the relationship with Freya’s Valley, Helgenaes and Tolkien.
Mead
The Drink of Wisdom
– an ancient tradition that still tastes sweet and enchanting. Dive into Nordic mythology and experience history’s sweetest nectar. Mead, also known as the “drink of wisdom”, has enchanted the taste buds for centuries with its unique blend of honey, spices and herbs (later also berries and fruits). Whoever drank the mead was honored with both wisdom and good poetic skills.
Today, you can still enjoy this ancient drink and be moved by its history and magic. Let the mead embrace your senses and lead you into a world full of adventure and mystery.
Welcome to the wonderful universe of mead!
